Hey Gardeners, Plant now for fall and winter harvest!

tiago with garden seedsOne of the greatest things about gardening in Portland is how simple it can be to have fresh food from the garden most of the year.  Summer Solstice may seem like a crazy time to think about winter, but tucking some seeds into the ground now will yield a delicious bounty in the fall and winter.  Pretty great because you know that’s the time when prices creep up in the produce department.  Save some money and reap the joys of fresh garden food this winter.  ALL SEEDS AND GARDEN SUPPLIES 10% OFF!  (Excluding plants.) Happy Solstice!

Local Strawberries!

Thanks to our warm spring, Oregon’s berry season has arrived a little early this year!  We love these organic berries from Gathering Together Farm in Philomath, Oregon.  Come in on for a pint or reserve your flat for canning!  Did you know that strawberries contain less sugar then apples, bananas, oranges, pears, or peaches? They are also high in vitamin C, manganese and dietary fiber.

Rhubarb ~ The Local “Fruit” of the Season

Local Rhubarb from Big B Farm

Local Rhubarb from Big B Farm

Although we still have a little time to wait for local fruit (cherries and strawberries aren’t too far off, I promise!) rhubarb offers an early season sweet-tart treat.  Yes, it is technically a vegetable, but how many vegetables do YOU know that make off the hook pies and muffins?!?  On sale this week at Cherry Sprout for $2.79/lb.  Let’s get baking!

Manilla Mangoes ~ A Seasonal Treat

Manilla mango, aka ataulfo or Champagne mango.

Manilla mango, aka ataulfo or Champagne mango.

Don’t wait to try these beautiful and incredibly rich and juicy mangoes.  A Mexican variety, they are not available for most of the year.  Their smooth, thin skin is green when unripe, changing to a glowing yellow as they ripen (and sweeten!)  Manilla mangoes are at their finest when their skin is a little wrinkly.  Their flesh is smooth and firm with no fibers and their taste is full, sweet and creamy.  A perfect treat for a sunny afternoon!
